Yeah, it's pretty lame. The rumor is that the Church was pressured to do this by Mitt Romney whose 2012 presidential aspirations are being hurt by the perception that his church mistreats gays.
I truly hope the Mitt Romney rumor isn't true, because if it is...whoa boy. I can imagine a whole bag of nasty implications.
There is little else it could be other than Romney on another campaign and like it or not he needs the gay vote if there is even a chance for a republican getting back in the presidency. They are hopping to placate people for sure.
That is unless the church is about to have some divine revelation accepting gay unions/marriages.
